Make Your Own Flavored Yogurt

You know those happy accidents?  The ones that you totally didn't meant to make but somehow manage to turn completely awesome?  This was one of those.

Step 1: Shop at Aldi. (aka my favorite grocery store EVER)

Step 2: Buy this...

Step 3: Get home to realize you have a 32 oz. container of plain yogurt that is most definitely NOT vanilla.

(I would normally cut myself some slack on this because they look so freakin' alike, but I must confess that I made this booboo twice.  Two completely separate trips to the store, 3 weeks apart, same outcome).

Step 4: Brainstorm of ways that you can salvage said plain yogurt without having to go back to the store and return it.

Step 5: Make your own flavored yogurt!

This is so easy I'm surprised I've never done it before.  What you'll need:
  • 32 oz. plain yogurt (3 cups)
  • 3 Tbsp sugar (I used a sugar substitute, no calories and same taste!)
  • 3 tsp vanilla extract (or another preferred flavor)
Mix all ingredients together and chill for approx. 20 minutes before eating.  That's all there is to it!  I actually prefer this over the actual 'vanilla' version.  And you can create a number of different flavors..strawberry, pineapple, lemon, almond, etc.

Mix with some fruit and granola and it's a perfect breakfast snack.

Do you have any happy accidents?

We get the plain yogurt for my daughter {we are kind of anti-sugar for our little ones}. Sometimes if I am out of the vanilla flavored I'll add a little applesauce and some blueberries and it is just perfect!

I've never tried to flavor my own yogurt but now I will, thanks to you. I like controlling the sugar. Thanks for posting this. I've even been interested in making my own yogurt, but I haven't tried that yet.
